Event Details

This Women’s History Month, celebrate Bay Area Black women makers with a day of delicious food, community, and family fun at the Embarcadero Ferry Terminal Plaza (south of the Ferry Building) and Ferry Plaza Farmers Market. Entry is free and open to the public, and food and drinks will be available for purchase.

Pop-Ups on the Plaza is a series of events celebrating Bay Area Black entrepreneurs, including businesses in Foodwise’s Building Equity program. Pop-Ups on the Plaza is a Port sponsored event brought to you by Foodwise. This program is proudly funded in partnership with the San Francisco Human Rights Commission’s Dream Keeper Initiative. Additional support is provided by the Ferry Building.

Zakiyyah Shaheed is the Co-Founder of Baby Bean Pie, an artisan food company that caters to anyone who enjoys treats that are both healthy and indulgent. Baby Bean Pie uses the superfood Navy Bean in a creative way in order to pack nutrition power into the diet in as many ways possible.

Zakiyyah grew up in the kitchen helping her mom who was a gifted cook and pastry chef. Her mom would bake and sell a variety of foods throughout the community and this was her first example of entrepreneurship. Zakiyyah has always enjoyed creating in the kitchen and she was trusted to cook simple items as early as six years old. Her passion for food inspired her to study Nutritional Science at San Diego State University. Zakiyyah is now a Degreed Nutritionist with experience working in food service at five different companies over the course of ten years.

All demos take place in the Foodwise Classroom (under the tents in front of the Ferry Building) and are free to the public, with recipes and samples for all.

Linda Shiue, MD, Chef, Dip ABLM is a physician, professionally trained chef, and the Director of Culinary Medicine and Lifestyle Medicine at Kaiser Permanente San Francisco, where she founded Thrive Kitchen, a teaching kitchen for patients. She believes that the best medicine is prevention. Her cooking classes showcase seasonal produce, lavishly flavored with spices and fresh herbs. Her first cookbook, Spicebox Kitchen, was a 2022 Gold Award Winner in the Nautilus Book Awards and a Finalist in the 2022 IACP Awards. Dr. Shiue is an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Kaiser Permanente School of Medicine. She serves on the boards of the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank, Meals on Wheels of San Francisco and the Teaching Kitchen Collaborative. She is a graduate of Brown University, San Francisco Cooking School, UCSF and the kitchen of Michelin-starred restaurant, Mourad, in San Francisco and has a Certificate in Plant Based Nutrition from Cornell University. Chef Olivier (“Olive”) Said is the founder and co-owner of Kitchen on Fire and one of the East Bay’s most popular culinary personalities. Chef Olive teaches many of the Kitchen on Fire classes, leads team-building and private events, and prepares nutritionally relevant meals for people with illnesses. Olive’s family in France has been in the restaurant business for over 400 years!

Micah Siva is a trained chef, registered dietitian, recipe writer, and food photographer, specializing in modern Jewish cuisine. After graduating from the Natural Gourmet Institute of Health & Culinary Arts, she pursued a career in nutrition and later worked for global brands, media outlets, and publications in food media. She shares Jewish-inspired, plant-forward recipes through her blog, Nosh with Micah. She is the author of the new cookbook Nosh: Plant Forward Recipes Celebrating Modern Jewish Cuisine (Simon & Schuster, March 2024). Micah lives in San Francisco, California, with her husband, Josh, and dog, Buckwheat.
