Scharffen Berger Chocolate Maker is a mecca at the Marketplace for chocolate lovers. The shop carries the full line of Scharffen Berger chocolates, cocoa powder, nibs and sauces. In addition, there are special cups for hot chocolate, vintage posters, and necessities for the chocolate aficionado. On the horizon are plans for chocolate ice cream and chocolate drinks only available at the Ferry Building Marketplace and the Berkeley factory store. Scharffen Berger Chocolate Maker was founded in 1996 by winemaker John Scharffenberger and physician Robert Steinberg with one simple goal—to make the finest chocolates possible using traditional methods and the most flavorful, natural ingredients. They began with one core product—their signature dark, intense, 70% bittersweet chocolate, and have since grown the company with a wide selection of products. Scharffen Berger moved to its permanent home, a 27,000-square-foot, 1906 vintage-brick warehouse in Berkeley, California, in 2001. Factory tours are offered daily and treat visitors to a close up view of the bean-to-bar process using vintage European chocolate-making equipment. |
