Scharffen Berger Chocolate Maker is a mecca at the Marketplace for chocolate lovers. The shop carries the full line of Scharffen Berger and Dagoba (its sister company) chocolate, cocoa powder, nibs, and baking products. One special feature of the Ferry Building store is the Scharffen Berger Chocolate Maker's Series - a special series of limited edition single origin chocolate bars available nowhere else.
Scharffen Berger Chocolate Maker was founded in 1996 by winemaker John Scharffenberger and physician Robert Steinberg with one simple goal - to make the finest chocolate possible, from sourcing the cacao beans to wrapping the finished bars, using traditional methods and the most flavorful, natural ingredients. They began with one core product - their signature dark, intense, 70% Bittersweet chocolate, and have since grown the company with a wide selection of products. From 2001 to 2009, Scharffen Berger was based in a vintage brick warehouse and factory in Berkeley, California and now manufactures most of its fine chocolate in a large state-of-the-art bean-to-bar facility in the Midwest. Visitors to the Ferry Building store can sample from the Scharffen Berger or Dagoba product range and learn about the history of chocolate and the process of chocolate making from the knowledgeable staff.
