Six New Niche Shops

Six new small shops situated in the niches of the Ferry Building Marketplace have opened since June 1.  The Marketplace niche shops were created by the Ferry Building landlord Equity Office to expand offerings of sustainable, artisanal products and provide leasing opportunities, particularly for entry-level businesses.  The new shops, all existing Bay Area businesses, are Alfieri Farms, Beekind Honey Shop, Benedetta Holistic Skincare, Charles Phan, El Porteño Empanadas and Pepples Donuts. These shops join the existing niche shop Mariposa Baking Company. The niche shops will be daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m..

Specialized shops descriptions below:

o        Alfieri Farms:  For many years, Alfieri Farms has been a fixture at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Markets on Saturdays and Tuesdays. The family farm is in San Joaquin County and the Ferry Building niche shop sells the farm’s almonds, walnuts, and pistachios, along with dried fruits, nut butters, trail mixes, and nut brittle year-round and fresh fruit when it is in season --- including grapes, apricots, peaches, grapefruit and lemons.
o        Beekind Honey Shop:   Beekind is run by the husband and wife team of Doug and Katia Vincent, and daughter Bri.  Doug and Katia opened their original Beekind store in Sebastopol in 2004.  At the Ferry Building, Beekind specializes in honey and beeswax candles. The shop sells honey Doug and Katia have collected from their own bees, along with honey from many Bay Area beekeepers, and major varietal honeys from around the U.S.  Doug has taken home Gold Medal awards for his candles from the Sonoma County Harvest Fair.
o        Benedetta Holistic Skin Care:  Founded in 1996, Benedetta is Julia Faller’s Sonoma County-based skin and body care line made from farm-sourced botanicals.  Ingredients come from Certified Organic and Biodynamic farms, many of them local.  Each product is made by hand in small batches to assure quality and freshness. There are no toxic fillers, chemical preservatives, or synthetic ingredients.  Products include a body wash, lotions, seaweed bath, and many more “food for the skin” preparations.
o        Charles Phan: At this kiosk across from Out the Door, shoppers will be able to stock up on ingredients, cooking kits, broths and sauces made famous at Chef Charles Phan’s Slanted Door. House made specialty items include chili paste, sate paste, stocks, marinades, and dressings. Also featured will be Asian Spices including 5-spice, Schezuan peppercorns, Chinese cinnamon, cloves, galangal, turmeric, coriander, and Chinese nutmeg.
o        El Porteño Empanadas:  Joseph Ahearne has been selling his El Porteño Empanadas at farmer’s markets since 2007. They are made from a family recipe from his mother and aunts in Argentina, and start with a rich, buttery crust.  Fillings include the highest quality meat and vegetarian offerings:   grass-fed beef from Prather Ranch; chicken from Fulton Valley Farms; produce from Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market growers; and mushrooms from Far West Fungi. Plans are in the works for additional fillings, including cured meats from Boccalone at the Marketplace.
o        Mariposa Baking Company: Patti Furey Crane launched Mariposa Baking in the Fall of 2004 with a small team of artisan bakers in Oakland, California. Mariposa Baking Company’s mission is simple -- create gluten-free baked goods that are indiscernible from the finest, high-caliber gluten-based products available. Mariposa's artisan-crafted gluten-free baked goods are made daily using the highest quality all-natural ingredients in their dedicated gluten-free and Certified Green bakery.  At the Ferry Building kiosk you can find their freshly baked gluten-free breads, bagels, focaccia, cookies, muffins, pizza, ravioli and much more, every day of the week.
o        Pepples Donuts:  Pepples Donuts, owned by Josh Levine and based in West Oakland, has been selling 100% organic, vegan donuts since April 2007. There is a cake style donut, and fluffy raised donuts of all types. Signature glazes include blueberry, lemon-poppy, coconut, chocolate, sprinkles and seasonal flavors like pumpkin pie, orange creamsicle, salt caramel and cherry.
