Nick McDonell, Peter Orner & Tom Barbash present McSweeney's Issue 34 and An Expensive Education.

McSweeney's began in 1998 as a literary journal that published only works rejected by other magazines. Since then, McSweeney's has attracted works from some of the finest writers in the country and has grown to be one of the country's best-read and most widely circulated literary journals. With an expanding, loyal subscriber base and strong independent bookstore following, McSweeney's is committed to finding new voices.

Nick McDonell is the author of three novels, most recently An Expensive Education ($24.00). He has reported from  Africa, the Middle East, and elsewhere for Harper’s, Libération, and other publications.

Peter Orner is the author of the novel, The Second Coming of Mavala Shikongo, finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and a collection, Esther Stories, winner of the Rome Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and a finalist for the Pen/Hemingway Award. Orner is also the editor of Underground America: Narratives of Undocumented Lives published by McSweeney's/ Voice of Witness. His work has appeared in Best American Stories, The Atlantic Monthly, Granta, and The Paris Review. Orner received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2006. Born in Chicago, he now lives in San Francisco.

Tom Barbash is the author of the novel The Last Good Chance and the nonfiction book On Top of the World. His short stories have appeared in Tin House, One Story, the Virginia Quarterly Review, Narrative, Story, StoryQuarterly, and elsewhere. He is an associate professor at California College of the Arts.
