Cook Books, Cheese & Good Green Practices

Today the Marketplace is brimming with office workers & shoppers, taking in the exquisite weather. Many are gathering Spring produce & products in re-usable shopping bags. In the last year, numerous shops have debuted re-usable bags for shoppers - Delica rf1, Far West Fungi, Recchiuti all have wonderful bags for a nominal price. Tomorrow - Saturday April 26 -  the Center for Urban Education About Sustainable Agriculture will give away 10,000 re-usable bags (sponsored by Google) at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market  - during the Waste Wise Celebration (see details below).  Recipients will be asked to pledge to re-use the bag in an effort to divert the reliance on disposable plastic bags. During this Earth Day week and through the year - we invite you to shop at the Ferry Building with canvas totes, baskets and re-used bags in tow.

Sur La Table Cook Book Signing

Sur La Table, the premier store for creative cooking and artful entertaining, will welcome cookbook author Marie Simmons for a book signing tonight - Friday April 25th at the Ferry Building Marketplace from 6:30 pm to 8 pm. Here is a chance to meet the author of Things Cooks Love, which has received rave reviews from Bon Appetit, the Associated Press and Publisher’s Weekly. The Associated Press said about this book, “Now there's a cookbook to help you put all those must-have items to use. Marie Simmons' latest, "Things Cooks Love," was written with gear-loving foodies in mind.” During the book signing events Simmons will sign copies of Sur La Table’s new cookbook, Things Cooks Love.  Recipes created by a stellar list of chefs utilizing Staub products and an exclusive wine tasting with wines from the C. Donatiello Winery will be featured.  San Francisco  featured chefs are Roland Passot, La Folie and Left Bank; Gerald Hirigoyen, Piperade and Bocadillos; Traci Des Jardins, Jardinière, Acme Chophouse and Mijita. Waste Wise Celebration at Ferry Plaza Farmers Market

Join the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market on Saturday April 26 from 8 am to 2pm when they roll out their new Waste Wise Stations. Waste Wise is a comprehensive waste reduction program and education campaign, featuring custom-made Waste Wise stations, informational displays, and a goal to phase out the use of plastic bags in the farmers’ market in 2009. At the markets Saturday, April 26, the nonprofit Center for UrbanEducation about Sustainable Agriculture (CUESA), which operates the farmers’market, will roll out new Waste Wise stations made of side-by-side collectionbins for compost, recycling, and trash. Festivities include a give-away of 10,000 reusable bags, sponsored by Google, a screening of the funand fact-filled film about our consumption and production patterns entitledThe Story of Stuff, a cookingdemonstration, a reusable bag parade, recycled art exhibits and more! 8:00 am – 2:00 pm

 

New Waste Wise stations - Compost and recycle to your heart's content at our new Waste Wise stations. Volunteers will be on hand to help you determine what's compostable, what's recyclable, and what's waste.

Reusable bag giveaway - If you're a local shopper, come to the South Side of Ferry Building for a free reusable tote bag. Bay Area residents only--shoppers may be asked to show ID to determine eligibility.

Waste Wise educational display - Learn more about what happens to food scraps when they go in the trash versus when they get composted. Touch compost created by San Francisco's food scraps. Learn how to discern compostable from non-compostable food service ware.

The Reclaim Game - Test your recycling and composting knowledge with a fun interactive game.

Information tables - The San Francisco Department of the Environment will have a special table in the market to provide information and answer questions about the Fantastic 3 program (compost, recycling & waste). Golden Gate Disposal / Sunset Scavenger will have a special table in the market to provide assistance and information for those interested in adding to or changing their recycling and composting service. The Maker Faire will have a special table in the market showcasing local crafts people making things with recycled and reclaimed materials and other green projects.

9:00 am – 1:00 pm

The Story of Stuff film screening - Every hour on the hour, the 20-minute film “The Story of Stuff” will be shown in the Port Commission Hearing Room, second floor of the Ferry Building. Don't miss this fast-paced, fact-filled look at our consumption and production patterns.

9:30 am - 12:30 pm

Recycled art display - In the Port Commission Hearing Room, Trash Mash-Up, a community youth art project, will display some of their “Maskostumes,” which are original pageant masks and costumes inspired by traditions from around the world and made using disposable materials collected before they enter the waste stream. Norcal Waste Systems will have a recycled art slide show from their Artist in Residence Program at SF Recycling & Disposal, Inc.

10:15 am – 11:00 am

Meet the waste-wise sellers - Learn about some of the innovative waste-wise practices of Ferry Plaza Farmers Market sellers! Nigel Walker uses compost generated by the city of San Francisco at his Eatwell Farm in Dixon. Benoit de Korsak of Saint Benoit Yogurt uses returnable, reusable packaging for his yogurt. Sebastian Bariani of Bariani Olive Oil reuses pastes left over from pressing his olives to generate heat in his custom oven. Todd Champagne of Happy Girl Kitchens prevents waste through pickling and preserving.

11:00 am – 12:00 am

Waste-wise cooking demonstration ~ Craig Stoll of Delfina   Enjoy a cooking demonstration by chef Stoll using ingredients purchased that morning at the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market. Located in CUESA's teaching kitchen, outside under the arcades north of the Ferry Building's clock tower.

12:30 pm

Bag Parade- Bring your own bag and show it off in the Bag Parade. Participants should meet in the North Arcade near Taylor’s Refresher at 12:15 pm Trash Mash-Up will liven up the parade with fun costumes and noise makers made from reclaimed materials.               

Mario Batali at Book Passage

Mario Batali signs copies of Italian Grill on Monday May 5th at Book Passage at 4 p.m..The superstar chef, television host, and award-winning author of Molto Italiano brings us his new book Italian Grill, which combines Batali’s passion for Italian cuisine and tasty grilled food. It covers appetizers, flatbreads, meats, seafood and vegetables along with his signature olive oil, citrus, wine, herbs, and garlic rubs. Batali has eight restaurants in the U.S., and he has won the James Beard Award for Best Chef: New York City.

Milk Moon Dinner at Boulettes Larder

Boulettes Larder and Cowgirl Creamery collaborate on an enchanting evening dinner to celebrate the Milk Moon of May. Select Cowgirl cheeses will be woven into each course of Amaryll's menu and accompanied by wine pairings to make for a delightful spring celebration at Boulettes Larder. Raw Cheese Panel Discussion

Join the Commonwealth Club and the Ferry Building Marketplace for a panel discussion on Cheese in the Raw: Evaluating Risks and Rewards. Drawing on their professional experience in the industry and up-to-date research on dairy production, this panel will separate fact from fiction in the ongoing controversy surrounding the production and sale of raw-milk cheeses. They will discuss whether pasteurization advocates are exaggerating the risks, as well as their opinions on the government's current 60-day rule, which specifies that raw-milk cheese must be matured longer than 60 days. You'll have a chance to consider their arguments while enjoying a distinctive selection of artesanal cheese.Panel includes:

In the true spirit of best compostable practices - Taylor's Automatic Refesher debuted new waste stations on Earth Day! Did you know that the plastic cup Taylor's Refesher serves their famous Peanut butter & Chocolate Shake from is made from corn plastic? The Gott Brothers and their team have been working tirelessly over the last year to find the best compostable food service products. Kudos to their efforts!
